     *     TrueType-Fonts for ancient languages       *
     **************************************************

Just a short note: Basically the usage of these fonts is free of charge, but I would kindly ask every user to pay me the amount of money, which he (or of course she) thinks will make up for all the effort I have made. Further details below. If you don't think they are worth anything to you, but you want to use then though, you should at least send me a postcard or an e-mail (rk_fonts@geocities.com). I leave it to you, if you pay me for my efford, or if you just want to say thanks to me for creating these fonts. So don't hesitate to mail me, even if you don't pay me anything.

1) SHORT INFORMATION
This compilation includes TrueType fonts for the following languages:
     - Greek with accents (a modification of the font "Symbol")
     - Meroitic (Hieroglyphics, Demotic and Transscript)
     - Oldpersian Cuneiform
     - Sanskrit
     - Ugaritic Cuneiform (and Transscript)
A Setup-Program is included, which installs the files and the fonts in the Windows-System. Added to every font there are sample-files and the assignment of the keys of the keyboard as Write or WinWord 2.0-documents (for view with Word, Wordpad of Windows 95 or any other good word processor). These files are installed in the corresponding subdirectory.
As a software-author my aim is a widespread usage of my programs and so I would ask you to pass on these fonts (with the setup-program) to anyone who is interested in it. You do not violate any of my rights by it, as the fonts are free of charge and as long as you don't change any of the files or remove or add any files.

-+-+--+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-

2) INSTALLATION
Just run the setup program INSTALL.EXE provided in the archive and follow the instructions.

The font can be used in any window application such as Microsoft Words, Lotus AmiPro, Microsoft Excel, Lotus 123, WordPerfect, Microsoft Write, Microsoft Works, PrintShop for Windows, AutoCad for windows, Canvas for Windows, Paintbrush for windows etc....

In order to use, run any window version of above software listed or (Write). Select the name of the font (usually RK plus name of the language) Font from font menu, then press any upper and lower case key. You will see font on screen.

For good test purpose, size select your writing sentence, make font to very large size font (for example size 127), print on your printer to see output. This fonts are TrueType and are designed based on vector base. Therefore increasing very large size of bit, they will not zigzag output due to increasing vector size.

4) INFORMATION TO EACH FONT
(In each header you can find the name of the font.)

4.1) Greek with accents: Symbol Accentuated

Historical: The ancient Greek authors and poets of the best time did not use accents, which were introduced a few hundred years later to provide a better readability and more information about the pronunciation. Till now there were no fonts available to use such vowels with accents and spiritus, so that you had to use the ordinary vowel and draw the accent or the spiritus manually.
The Font: The most common of the vowels with accents and spiritus are easy to reach by just entering the accent-key (, ` or ^) and then entering the vowel. For further information look into the files tasttab.doc or tasttab1.doc.
The Files: tasttab.doc, tasttab1.doc and sy_lay.doc contain the key assignment, sy_tab.doc all the available sign with their ANSI-Code-Number, and symbacc.ttf contains the font. The rest of the files contain pieces from the most renowned authors such as Platon, Homer, Lukian, Aristotle, and some more...

4.2) OLDPERSIAN CUNEIFORM: RK Persian Cuneiform

Historical: The oldpersian Cuneiform - not to confuse with the babylonian cuneiform - is a soon form of a letteral script (or rather a mixture between letteral and syllabic script).
The Font: Because the oldpersian cuneiforms contain more than 26 different signs, uppercase and lowercase letters look different.
The Files: The file pc_tab.doc contains a complete table of all the signs together with their ANSI-Code, pc_lay.doc the keyboard-layout and the file pc_signs.doc contains information about the assignment of the keys and about all the available signs. inscript.wri contains two inscripts in oldpersian cuneiform and the file percunei.ttf contains the font.

4.3) SANSKRIT: RK Sanskrit

The Font: The lowercase letters create the ordinary consonant (with the "a"), the uppercase letter create the same consonant, but aspirated (e.g. "k" creates the sign for "ka", whereas "K" creates the sign for "kha"). The vowels are (apart from the short i) entered after the consonant and are displayed above of below the previous consonant. (The keys for the vowels create the sign for the vowel after a consonant. If the vowel is the first letter in the word, the vowel has to be written with the Gravis - e.g. for an o at the beginning of the word.)
If two consonants are to be written without any vowel (not even an a) between, the vertical line of the first is to be removed - the signs for the most common of them are on the keyboard above the numbers (!, ", , $, %, %, and so on..., for a table of all of these signs read one of the tables of signs). The others are to be entered by their ANSI-Code (Press down the ALT-key, enter the number with the number block on your keyboard and release the ALT-key).
The most common clusters (two consonants without a vowel between are assigned to one key and so can be reached quite fast (mostly by an accented vowel - e.g. , , , etc.). They can also be entered be entered by their ANSI-Code.
sa_tab.doc shows all the signs together with their assigned key and their ANSI-Code.
The Files: sa_tab.doc contains a list of all the signs together with their ANSI-Code, sa_lay.doc contains the keyboard-layout (can not be complete for most of the clusters are to reach by a combination of keys such as accented vowels). sa_signs.doc contains a table with all the signs and their assigned keys, sa_samp.wri is a text piece from the Bhagavad-Gita, chapter 2, and sanskrit.ttf contains the font.

4.4) MEROITIC: RK Meroitic (Hieroglyphics)
                RK Meroitic (Demotic)

Historical: The inhabitants of the imperium of Meroe (on the ground of Ethiop) were the first people to use a letteral script. The signs for this script they took from the Egypts - the Hieroglyphics (they did not use all the many hundreds of Hieroglyphics, but selected just 23 of them). They used two different scripts: Hieroglyphics and Demotic (compaire it with our scripts!!!)
NOTE:With this font you do not get a font to write the Egyptian Hieroglyphics, although they look similar (but are much more).
The Font: The 23 letters of the alphabet are (as far as possible) assigned to the keys according to their phonetic value. The uppercase and lowercase letters look the same, all the keys which are not assigned create the word separator.
The Files: The files md_tab.doc and mh_tab.doc show in a list all the signs of the font together with their ANSI-Code and the according sign in Times New Roman. md_lay.doc and mh_lay.doc show the keyboard-layout and mero_dem.ttf and mero_hie.ttf contain the fonts.

4.5) UGARITIC: RK Ugaritic

Historical: When some Archeologists digged in the ruins of Ras Schamra in the north of Syria, they found the ruins of a palace with a huge archive of texts in Ugaritic script. The commercial center Ugarit is situated at the edge between western-eastern and northern-southern cultural trends. Of all the scripts of the Near East the cuneiform script was the most important ansd so it is no wonder, the Ugaritc script is also a cuneiform script. The cuneiform script - originally used as syllabic script - lost this syllabic character in the Ugaritic script, which is a mere letteral script, containing of 30 letters. The Ugaritic cuneiforms are interesting, because they show that a cuneiform script suits all the requirements to serve as a letteral script.
The Font: Because the Ugaritic alphabet contains 30 different signs, uppercase and lowercase letters look different.
The Files: The file ug_tab.doc contains a cocmplete table of all the signs together with their ANSI-Code, ug_lay.doc the keyboard-layout and the file ug_signs.doc contains information about the assignment of the keys and about all the available signs. ugaritic.wri contains a short text in Ugaritic script and the file ugaritic.ttf contains the font.
